It was decided to drop the German national football team’s title, “Manschaft”, as of now, after protests by the fans and a number of officials. The German Football Association announced on Thursday (July 28, 2022) that its supervisory board and the shareholders’ assembly had unanimously decided to stop using the title “Mannchevt” as a trademark.
And the German national team held the title of “Manchester” for a long time, especially abroad, and became the official brand of the team as of 2015, one year after winning the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
But the team’s mediocre results in recent years have led to a reconsideration of the matter, and the fans have expressed their rejection of the title on the grounds that it bears a lot of exaggeration. The former Bayern Munich star Lothar Matthaus and head of the German Football Association, Hans-Joachim Watzke, called for the title to be dropped.
“The appearance of the team is more important than the name anyway,” said Bernd Neuendorf, president of the German Football Association.
“In this regard, I have complete confidence in (manager) Hansi Flick and (DFB director) Oliver Bierhoff and the players, who made a great new start last year.”
In the same context, German national team coach Hansi Flick said a few weeks ago, “I do not think that the name (the team) or anything else contributes in the end to achieving success or not.” He added in statements carried by the German “Tagsschau”: “Everyone is part of Germany.” Everyone loves to play for this nation.”
As for the German legend Lothar Matthaus, he said that it was better to invent a new name for Germany to “give freshness”, according to the widespread German newspaper “Bild”.
