On the occasion of the new season of the Bundesliga, whose matches officially start this week (on August 5, 2022), the Dortmund team celebrated with its fans a big party on Sunday (July 31, 2022), in which about 65,000 fans attended, saluting the players and coaching staff.
But the absent attendee at the party was new player Sebastian Haller, whose testicular malignancy still traumatizes in the den of Westphalian lions. Although Haller was unable to attend due to his health condition, as he will undergo chemotherapy soon after the tumor was removed, he addressed the fans with an influential message via a video shown on the screen of the “Signal Iduna Park”, as reported by the German “Der Westen” website.
“Hello Borussia Dortmund fans! You know I can’t unfortunately be with you today. But I really appreciate your support,” Haller said in the video, which the team also posted on Twitter. Good, I will follow you and I wish you the best.”
Haller will be out for several months, the team announced, but the chances of him recovering fully are “extremely good”, sporting director Sebastian Keil said in a statement published on Saturday (30 July 2022). “We wish him and his family a lot of strength and optimism, and our sympathies are with him in these difficult times,” Kiel added.
Dortmund coach Eden Terzic dedicated the team’s victory over “1860 Munich” (3/0) in the first round of the German Cup to Haller.
“We miss Sebastian every day, we miss him as a human being,” Terzic said after the match that took place on Friday (29 July 2022). “We promised him to qualify for the next round. We are very happy to keep that promise.” Haller joined Borussia Dortmund this summer from Ajax. It was announced that he had a testicular tumor on Monday (July 18, 2022).
