Former Wales and Manchester United star Ryan Giggs has kicked his then-girlfriend out of a hotel room while she was naked, a British court heard on Tuesday.
Giggs, 48, is on trial for compulsive behavior and assaulting his ex-girlfriend, Kate Greville, and her younger sister, Emma.
In an interview heard by the bench, Ms Greville, 36, told investigators that Giggs had been her “best friend and soul mate” but had become “abusive and obscene”.
Giggs denied all charges against him.
He is accused of controlling and compulsive behavior against Kate Greville, between August 2017 and November 2020.
He is also accused of assaulting Kate Greville, causing actual bodily harm, and repeatedly assaulting Emma Greville at his home in Worsley, Greater Manchester, on 1 November 2020.
The court in Manchester heard Greville’s interview with police, weeks after she claimed the former Wales coach hit her in the head in November 2020.
The plaintiffs claim that this happened when Giggs returned home, while Kate was preparing to go out.
Explaining her decision to end the relationship, she said, “I needed to do something for myself. It took everything away from me. I needed a little control.”
“All life was a lie”
She said that she would “disappear” from his life and wrote him a letter, but events accelerated and were not sent.
“The whole life was a lie,” she added, crying to the police. She told investigators that Giggs had once “go crazy” in a hotel room after she confronted him about texting another woman.
She said he got up and grabbed her wrist “hard”, “dragged” her naked on the floor and threw her and her belongings down the aisle. She added that she felt “humiliated and embarrassed”.
She told investigators that months before the alleged assault in November 2020, she found evidence that Giggs had had an affair with eight other women over the previous six years.
She noted that she saw “danger signs” early in the relationship, and it was “as if (Gigs) were two (different) people”.
She told investigators that she was married when their relationship began, that she was in an unhappy marriage and that her husband was bossy. So was Giggs married.
“He was telling me about his marriage and he was not happy, and I was telling him about my marriage,” she said.
She said that things “evolved” from that moment on, and she left her husband two months later. “He was like a best friend and my soul mate, he was the one who saved me from this marriage,” she added.
“You are a whore”
She said that Giggs kept promising her during their relationship that he would leave his wife after she ended her marriage, but that did not happen.
She said she once stopped talking to him, ignoring his messages and calls.
Kate told the police that Giggs once came to her house, but she ignored it, causing him to shout, “You whore. Do you have someone inside?”
He went on to threaten her that he would tell her boss about their secret relationship, she said.
Rumors started in Kate’s workplace about her affair with Brian, but she lied about it because she was “ashamed of her relationship with a married man”.
She added that Giggs was texting her that his marriage was over, but she found out again that it was not.
“It was just a deception,” she added. “It went on for ages.”
The relationship was revealed publicly in May 2016, the court heard, and Kate said it was “appalling” because she was “stalled by photojournalists”.
“As if you were addicted to it”
The court heard that she continued an on-and-off relationship, despite occasionally blocking him on her phone and emails.
“It was like I was addicted to it,” she said. “I couldn’t get it out of my head.”
As their relationship continued, she said, he was telling her that he had left his wife and moved in with his mother.
“Then I found out he didn’t. It went on for nine months and then I realized he wasn’t going to break up with (his wife at the time), and that’s not going to happen,” she said.
In the end, Kate said she gave him an ultimatum but nothing changed, so she decided to move to Abu Dhabi to “get away from him”.
Giggs resigned in June from his role as coach of the national team for Wales, after a period of leave since November 2020.
During Giggs’ time at Old Trafford, Manchester United won 13 Premier League titles, two Champions League titles, four FA Cups, and three EFL Cups.
He also won 64 international matches with Wales, and is a co-owner of the club “Salford City”, which plays in the second tier of the English Premier League.
The trial is still going on.
