The Korean company Samsung announced its most expensive foldable phone, the Galaxy Z Fold 4, with some minor updates from the previous generation.
But has Samsung won the bet on foldable devices that it started 3 years ago?
To answer this question, we use a report published by TheVerge by Alison Johnson, in which she spoke at length about her experience with foldable phones.
The writer admits that she is not a fan of tablets. Like a large percentage of users, they feel that these devices have no clear place in the rankings, they are too weak to do what a computer does, and too big for normal phone operations.
But with this belief, Johnson found that there is an aspect of Samsung’s vision that could be encouraging for the development of foldable phones that you haven’t seen before, and I found it recently when I used a small “Galaxy ZFold 4” phone, which is not having to get up from the sofa to get a computer Portable to do some work that you can’t do on a mobile phone.
Is there a difference between it and “ZFold 3”?
The update differs from the previous version of the Galaxy Fold Z3 phone is in the use of the latest flagship Qualcomm processor, with better cameras and mainly focusing on the development of foldable screen technology, attention has been paid to reducing the size of the hinge to become better than the previous version.
The writer considers that the best thing I noticed in the ZFold 4 – after a week of using the phone – is the external screen of the device, it is only a few millimeters wider, but it is more beautiful in use than the screen in the previous version, which looked more like a remote control. It’s the device’s external screen that you look at and text on hundreds of times a day, so those few millimeters make a difference.
Let’s start with the screens. The hinges and bezels are slightly smaller than those on the Fold 3 giving the 6.2-inch cover screen a bit more room. It has a resolution of 2316 x 904 and an aspect ratio of 23.1:9, which is slightly wider than the 2268 x 832 “Fold 3” screen with a ratio of 24.5:9.
The writer says she felt a little tight at first from the large size, but after about a day she got used to it. And you see, the keyboard still requires a little more focus.
The main screen is still 7.6 inches like last year’s, now with a resolution of 2176 x 1812 and an aspect ratio of 21.6:18.
It is technically smaller than the Fold 3 but you can barely notice the difference as it is 8 grams lighter and 0.2 mm thinner.
The writer says that when you open the Fold in tablet mode, there is still a prominent crease on the inner screen, depending on the viewing angle and what’s on the screen, although it’s often not very noticeable.
The camera at the bottom of the screen on the main screen is hidden a little better than previous models, and Samsung has rearranged the layer of pixels on top of it to try to hide it better.
The company tweaked some features of the big screen software on the Fold 4, starting with moving the taskbar from the side of the screen to the bottom, so that it runs automatically as well, a change from the behavior of the sidebar in the Fold 3.
This is the essence of the new phone. Lots of things a little nicer, but nothing fundamentally better.
Galaxy Fold Z4 features
The Fold 4 also provides more ways to enter split screen mode to start doing what this phone was built for, multitasking.
With an app open on the home screen, you can still start split screen by dragging and dropping another app onto the screen. This time, you can also start split-screen display by swiping with two fingers from the bottom or sides of the screen.
This is off by default, so you have to enable it in settings, and it works fine enough, but the writer didn’t find it as useful as the old drag and drop method.
You can also make apps always display a multi-screen options button. This is a small knob at the top of an app window that usually appears once you’re in split screen view. And with the handle always visible, you can just tap it to split the screen or open the current app in a popup.
It didn’t take long to realize the importance of the multi-screen interface for the writer, as her whole understanding of the idea of foldable phones changed. She had a list in her mind of tasks she’d rather complete on her laptop than on her phone, like things that required moving to an email or a browser window or switching between apps frequently.
While using the fold 4, that list became much shorter. She was able to put together a grocery order, compare baby gates she would like to buy, and even posted a blog about Fold4 while using it.
The author gave an example of an expense report, where this is usually included in a list of “to do on a laptop” list because it requires going back to her Starbucks order history and credit card statement.
Using the “Fold Z4” I kept the three applications open on the screen at the same time, and it was a somewhat enjoyable experience, according to the writer.
Disadvantages of the new phone
The writer considers that there is one minor problem with the “Galaxy Z Fold 4”, which is the price, which she considers great, as the cost of the device is $ 1799, which is almost the same price as the “Fold 3” when it was launched.
Commenting on the high price, she said, “We don’t know how long this design will last 4 or 5 years from now. Spending that much money on a phone isn’t a good option for most people even if we leave out concerns about its screen’s long-term durability.”
And there is the Android platform for tablet apps, where the writer had problems using the phone in multi-screen mode, where the phone apps still spanned a larger panel instead of the tablet apps. This leaves a lot of empty space unused “and I found myself opening more apps just to use the empty space for something”.
The Fold Z4 is IPX8 rated which means you can submerge it in fresh water, but it’s not dust resistant which is also a concern. Particles entering the screen via the hinge can create a mess.
The hinge now includes sweeping brushes to try to keep dust out, but it’s hard to say how effective they will be over 3 or 4 years of daily use.
On the surface level, there’s a pre-applied, non-user-replaceable screen protector, and Samsung says it’s using a stronger adhesive this year to keep it in place.
The writer does not see that the Fold 4 is still thick and cumbersome when folded, and although it can be used as an everyday phone, it is heavy and chunky enough that the writer does not prefer it as a daily phone, and says, “I could not discover a comfortable way to watch video hands-free, Which seems to be something you should be able to do.”
