She told Express.co.uk: “The dawn phenomenon is due to our normal biological systems in which production of the hormone insulin (which lowers glucose) is suppressed during sleep, and levels of other hormones that raise glucose (growth hormone, glucagon and cortisol) increase.

“There is also a theory (known as the Somogyi effect) that in people with diabetes who take insulin, high blood sugar in the morning can be a rebound effect of using too much insulin or, conversely, too little the night before. But this is controversial.”

What are the goals of blood sugar?

Your blood sugar goal is the range you are trying to reach as much as possible. According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), these are typical goals:

Before meals: 80 to 130 mg/dL.

Two hours after starting a meal: Less than 180 mg/dL.

The CDC also says that your blood sugar goals may be different depending on your age, any additional health problems you have, and other factors. Be sure to talk to your doctor about which goals are best for you.
