How to use Google Chat

Google Chat is Google’s answer to messaging apps like Slack, originally part of Google Workspace, and has replaced Hangouts as Google’s default messaging app. However, since it doesn’t support RCS or SMS messages, you’ll need to use Google Messages, which support these standards.

If you still use Hangouts, you won’t lose any of your messages by switching to Google Chat Hangouts users will find Google Chat familiar, as it offers the same features but adds extra features like emoji reactions and smart replies. Chat also introduces the Spaces feature, which contains valuable tools for group projects. If you’re not a fan of it, you can still use Hangouts for now.

Google Chat is available as an Android, iOS, browser, and desktop app. It’s also built into Gmail, so you don’t need to download a dedicated app to use it. We show you how to use Google Chat on your Android phone, but you’ll be able to follow the instructions regardless of your platform.

Set up a Google chat on your desktop
If you want to use Google Chat through your browser, just follow steps 1 and 2.

Head to the Google Chat website.
Sign in with your Google account.
Click the Install Google Chat button in the upper-right corner of Chrome to download the app.
Set up Google Chat on Gmail
Regardless of the Gmail platform, you can access Google Chat in seconds once you enable it If you plan to use it for desktop and mobile, you will need to enable chat from both platforms.

Find and select people to add to the space. If you want to set up Space before adding anyone, you can skip this step.
How to use Google Chat’s Spaces
Each space has a tab dedicated to displaying all shared files, if you want to use Google Chat for casual group chats, create a group chat instead.

How to share files in space

Select the Files tab.
Press the “Add Files” button in the lower right corner of your screen.
Find and select the file you want to share.
Click Submit to add the file to the space.
How to set tasks in space

Select the Tasks tab.
Tap the Add Tasks button in the lower right corner of your screen.
Enter a name for the task.
Add a description, a deadline, and a specific member using the three buttons below the name.
Press Save to add the task to Space.

How to use the integration in Google chat
Integration is a term for advanced messaging in Google Chat There are seven types: Images, Camera, GIF, Meet link, Calendar invite, Drive, and Format. You can access these options by clicking the Plus button to the left of the new message box in Google Chat. On the desktop or browser, some of these options are to the right of the message box.
